Started this newish Trumpeter kit for entry in the 2013 Model Expo. A WWI ship should be "easy" since there won't be a lot of superstructure and few anti aircraft guns. So, the choice was Warspite in 1915 or Queen Elizabeth in 1918....
I started with this kit, nice box art.... The hull molding looked good.
Construction started with airbrushing the hull with Vallejo's Model Air Dark Sea Gray and the decks with Model Air Wood.
I spent the next few nights painting the deck detail grey...
Work continued on the main guns and superstructure parts, getting the foremast and bridge parts alinged was the hardest part of construction so far and that went pretty smooth.
The base was started now since I decided to use airtist oils. I am using them because I wanted to do a greener ocean than I normally do. I picture this ship in shallower water at anchor which is why I am turning to greenish water.
Ah, now I found some fun!! The kit came with a small p/e fret, a few pieces to wrap around the bridge levels and the two funnel grills to form and place on top of the funnels. The fore funnel is done, took awhile and a few "words" to get it done, but it looks ok.
Construction progress as of now, things are going smooth so far.
I forgot to prime the Black plastic case base I am using for this ship in a light color, so of course, when I put down my first try at the ocean, the oils could not overpower the base and my oceam looked very dark. I have re-painted a second time after waiting for the oils to dry. It looks much better.
Maybe next time I will try this new Tamiya product!
I have discovered this kit is warped, test fitting the hull to the waterline plate the bow or stern stick up 5mm or so. I was planning of finishing the ship and then glue it to the waterline plate in "the ocean". Now I will have to glue the ship to the waterline plate before I instal railings since many rubber bands will be needed to get her down flat. Then construction will finish with her on the base. I am hoping not to F up the base while I do that.
Plans must always be modified!!
More soon.
