Hey guys,
I'm not totally new to modeling, but life has had its ways of putting hobby time on hold now and then. I say not new only because I started at a young age, but over the years I haven't had too much to show as far as results. The family life keeps me busy, but I try to model in the evenings as time permits; thus, the name Operation Dusk. All my modeling happens after the kids finally go to sleep at night. ;D
I started building cars as a teenager, back when Testors glass jars were the only thing available. That soon faded, and I didn't get back into the hobby until about 5 years ago. I then really got into aircraft and pretty much ate, slept and breathed it for a while. Unfortunately, I spent most of my time studying up on all the new techniques and basically drove myself crazy trying recreate what amazing work I saw.
It was pretty disappointing that I really wasn't getting much work done so I got into RC planes. I spent a lot of time building my own plane and eventually started flying with local clubs. The only problem with flying is that you have to get up at the butt crack of dawn for nice flying conditions. I stayed with it for a while, but of course got into the next best thing.
After planes was trains. For the past 3 years I've been hanging out with local club members and learning how to run operations. I now run the only Free-mo group in San Diego, but unfortunately, I'm a one man show at the moment. Not a lot of interest. Most people are members of the club downtown, and many don't like to change their ways. I started to disconnect myself from clubs and really focus on weathering freight cars, scratch building, and diorama building all in 1/87 scale HO. I still like to run trains now and then, but weathering is much more rewarding. I also run my own model train forum called Model Train Factory where we hope to build a thriving community based on tutorials.
Even with my trains still at the bench I decided to really get into sci-fi modeling. For a couple years now I had been eyeing the Maschinen Krieger genre with enthusiasm. It really is a unique line of models. I finally decided to break down and started buying direct from Japan. So my first sci-fi build is a 1/35 Gustav. The build is going a little slow at this smaller scale, and definitely look forward to modeling a 1/20.
So, I guess you could say I have lots of hobby interests. I like switching things around often to keep motivated, and am hoping that by meeting some locals I might learn some more hands-on techniques. Anyhow, nice to meet everyone, and look forward to future modeling conversation.
Burt
