I have started this ship since as I was working on the USS Albany that with the changes I had in mind for Albany I would not be able to complete her for the San Diego Model Expo. I chose the Nagara kit for a few reasons.....
1. it is a larger scale
2. I am familiar with the 5,500 ton ships of the IJN (I did build Nagara sister ship Natori in 1/700th)
3. and the design of the ships is not to complex and should build easy.
So here we go, the kit is by Aoshima in 1/350th scale.
It came with a small p/e fret...
I also bought Aoshima's dedicated "detail up" p/e fret...
Additional parts from Fine Molds, Lion Roar and Flyhawk will also be used to enhance what came in the kit.
The actual kit is molded nice, with good detail in the OOB kit.
Six different float planes are included in the kit, only the "Dave" will be used.
After listening to last months IPMS SD meeting to the discussion of the "pros" on plastic prep, paints and thinners, I decided to try to incorporate some into this build.
I am using Tamiya and Model Master paints with a few Vallejo colors for small brush up items. First step was to wash and wipe dry the entire model with alcohol prior to priming. I used a Vallejo acrylic primer..... Then Model Master "Maizura gray" for the steel parts. I am building Nagara as she appeared in the Surprise Attack unit number 4 on Dec 11 - 12 off the coast of Luzon, PI.
The decks were sprayed with Tamiya "Linoleum Brown" thined with Mr leveling thinner, and the lower hull was sprayed with Tamiya "Hull red"....
The biggest flaw in the kit is the upper deck which you see in this picture, it is badly warped..... How to fix this??
It will glue down easy enough and stay put, but I want to add the funnels and rig the stays to them before I glue the deck down. But the warpage will ruin the rigging until I get it flattened out.
I am also working on as many of the smaller fitting as I go along...
The bridge structure was molded with the modeler in mind, I like the way the parts breakdown is. It should be a simple build.
6 1/2 weeks to go!!!!!
