This ship will be a "Slammer" built for the Coronado library display. I have 4 months to get her done. This is the USS Boxer as she was after "conversion" to an Amphibious Assault Ship in the late 1950's. This should be a quick build since the hardest things about ships is all of the AA guns that must be added. By this time in US Navy history, most of the AA guns from her WWII appearance have been removed. All that is left are the 4 twin 5" mounts. The single 5" mounts and all 40mm and 20mm guns have been deemed "obsolete".
No aircraft other than the Helicopters were carried.
The kit is definitely Dragons "second team" there is flash, and poor fit. The hangar deck is also a bit warped. The kit gives some parts molded in clear plastic, this of course is a good and bad thing. I might try and use the clear plastic flight deck for this build to show the hangar bay, but the clear plastic used for molding some of the other parts makes them to thicker than normal styrene and they don't fit well.
Keel laying for LPH-4, USS Boxer in 1/700 scale.
Kit components, a lot of parts are not used...
Clear or normal plastic fight deck are included...
Island under construction.... with some of the clear parts causing poor fit, they seem to be thicker than the normal plastic.
This kit also comes with a lower hull, rare in a 1/700 kit, some decent photo-etch, and decals for the ship and helos.
Dragon even gives you 2 cute little tug boats in 1/700 scale. (he USS Pennsylvania 1944, gives you 2 cute little PT boats).
This ship should go pretty quick, I have 4 months to do her and a 1/72 helo for display at the library.
