;D No, this isn't a new project, it is a rescued project started years ago, I am going to finish it this year! The kit is Tamiya's 1/700 scale USS Indianapolis, CA-35 the second ship of the Portland class of Heavy Cruiser. this is the ship that in July of 1945 carried the atomic bomb from San Francisco to Tinian Is. in the Pacific, she was hit by 2 torpedoes from the Japanese sub I-58 4 days after delivering the bomb, she sank in 12 minutes. Most of her crew was lost due to a snafu in reporting her loss and starting a rescue search. The kit is very nice and will have Tom's Modelworks photo etch added and Dai-Riki 9x fishing line for rigging. Here we go! The Photo etch sheet Forward superstructure under construction After superstructure and seaplane well / hanger Painting begins..... She will be finished just like the box art since Tamiya chose to mold the kit in her final apperance.... To be IPMS accurate you have no other choice hehehe. So, Navy blue and haze gray for the hull, haze gray for the superstructure and deck blue for all horizontal surfaces seen from overhead.

Tonight work was done on the main battery ( 9 x 8" guns in 3 turrets) and they are ready for detail, each will received 2 w/t doors per side plus some rafts, different amount for each turret and a ladder. I also prepared the forward superstructure for adding about 5 portholes per side and a few w/t doors, I will also have to add two guy wires to each side of the forward stack. this is the overall view, most parts are still just dry fitted

After looking at the kit parts I thought there has to be missing details.... so, out came the Classic Warships profile on the USS Indianapolis to use for reference. The picture you see on the cover is also inside in 1/350 scale and 1/700 scale. Perfect! This took a long time locating the porthole and hatch locations, drilling them, gluing the PE hatches, sanding and priming. But, it looks better in the end. I have finished 3 of the 6 levels on the forward superstructure, work on the other levels tonight along with the forward funnel with guy wires some railing and ladders and I can the start the after superstructure next weekend, if all goes well.

Indy is also on the 2011, get done list.... The first task was to rig the guy lines on the fore funnel. Next step, begin adding the p/e railings on the forward areas of the ship.....
