Good day to all.
I just got back into modeling about 3 yrs ago. I'm retired US Navy and I tend to favor ship building. I build mostly 1/700 scale but do have some larger ships in the stash. I have never entered a local or any type of modeling contest. I hope to some day.
I build for myself and as gifts for friends and former shipmates.
Thanks,
Sam M

Welcome Sam! Glad to have another ship modeler around. I am cursed in that I build most types of kits.... planes, armor, Field Artillery, and ships.
Ships are probably my favorites, but I build them the least. Go figure!
Welcome to the forum, and I hope we see you at one of our meetings. If you are in San Diego we are holding a contest (WinterFest) this coming Saturday, come on down and take a look. It is in the open style of judging, where you earn a medal, not a competition against others for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
Modeling is about learning new skills and friends enjoying the hobby.

Mexmarine;
Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm a ship guy but if something catches my eye, I will build it. My only hang up right now is that I'm not an airbrush modeler. I still use rattle cans and a brush. Since I mainly work in 1/700 scale, I enjoy the detail work.
Maybe some day I will build up the courage to start using an airbrush.
Thanks
Sam

Sam, What period of ships do you like and what navys?
For me, I like ships from the USN, IJN and then others if they look good to my eyes..... Crusiers are a favorite of mine as well as submarines.

Daniel;
I'm an IJN guy but also like USN from WW1 and WW2. The IJN ships just to me seem very a head of there time. Some have even said that they seem very artistic. I have built a couple IJN light crusiers, IJN Mogami and an I-58 sub, all in 1/700 scale. I hope to have a good looking IJN Fleet to display at my home office. I have also built an IJN Kongo and gave that as a gift to a co-worker who is a big fan of IJN ships.
I'm waiting to start an 1/700 IJN Akagi Tri-deck. I should be starting on her the next week. I have a GMM IJN AC PE set for her and some extra other PE items to use. The Akagi will by put in a case and set in my collection.
I will keep you posted on this project.

;D very cool, I hope we will see pictures of your build here. Especially of any problems encountered..... this is a kit I have thought about getting.
I am collecting Mogami's, I want to do her as a 6" gun lt. cruiser, 8" heavy, and then as the hybrid carrier.
If you are not using p/e for IJN 25mm aa, check out the new Fine Molds "nanodread" series. The single, double and triple 25mm are very good plastic castings. I hate folding the 25mm mounts from p/e.

The Mogami Hybrid Carrier, is classic and I feel way a head of its time. How do you post photos? I'm having an issue with this.

Sam, We have found that 640x480 gives the perfect size for the forum. It fits without having to scroll back and forth.
I use photobucket, kind of a pain to start with, but once you understand how to navigate it is good. On the upload feature it has an option for what size you want the photo to be. I just locked mine at 640 x 480 then after I upload it is just a matter of selecting and posting. it also helps to make a lot of folders in photobucket, I learned the hard way that each model I post, or each meeting I post the pictures from goes into their own subfolder under a folder I have in the main directory. For example for me, under my main album (dancinsd) I have folders for ships, aircraft, tanks, meetings, shows etc..... When I start a ship model, i will select the ship folder and then create a subfolder for the USS Arizona for example..... before I started doing it that way before I knew it my main folder was 8 pages deep and hard to find things in. Now I have a clue where to look! Hope this helps.

Gabriel;
Thanks for the warm welcom. Yes, I plan on adding other Axis Fleets to the collection. It was a very inovative time for naval ship building.
