Welcome to my first ship since I was a teenager! The last ship I built was the Revell "HMS Cambelltown" 4 stack DD. After many years I wanted to get back to my first love in modeling..... Ships!
I picked the Tamiya, 1/350 scale Fletcher class Destroyer ( DD ) to learn on. To me, this is a GREAT kit for your first ship model, it is engineered to make it easy to assemble and easy to paint. I also decided to use photo etch (the first time I ever used a p/e set) so I bought the "Tom's Modelworks" Fletcher class Destroyer set..... I bought it for its price, cheap.
So here goes.....
Well underway in construction, the way Tamiya molded the kit, it was easy to get good paint lines between the vertical surfaces and horizontal surfaces, they also included a drawing of the camo. So using a copier to get it to the right size, then cutting it out and used it as a mask for airbrushing the colors.
Port side view...
Overhead view.... Do you see the boo boo? I learned well after she was done that the kit provides the proper gun tub for the twin 40mm mount on the stern. (I tried to scratch build the tub and did it in the wrong shape) It is not in the instructions, but a little research would have let me known about it BEFORE I showed it!
In the background is the Hasagawa 1/350 scale kit of the Japanese Destroyer "Kagero" 1940 (not as nice a kit as the Tamiya Fletcher).
The ship represented is the USS LaVallette, DD-448 a "round bridge" Fletcher class Destroyer. I picked this ship 1. because the decals were one of the choices, 2. she had the twin 40mm mounted astern, and 3. for her camo paint.
The paints were from Model master Acryl "marine line" of paints made for ships. The horizontal surfaces are in Deck Blue 20-B, and the Vertical camo is: Hull, Navy Blue 5-N and Ocean Gray 5-O with the Superstructure in Ocean Gray 5-O and Haze Gray 5-H.
Finished, painted, rigged and sexy!
I would recommend this kit to anyone, easy and fun to build. For research take a look at ModelWarships.com in the "Calling all Ships Fan" of the forum...... www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=8105
Enjoy..... next up, Trumpeters 1/350 scale build of the USS Lexington!
