BK, After building the Tamiya Fletcher and Trumpeter lexington kits in 1/350th with Tom's Modelworks p/e. I noticed spots in my p/e work that I could not reach with a brush to paint but the bare spots of brass really stood out like a lighthouse in the dark!
On my next builds I started spraying the sheet with just paint. I didn't use a primer for fear of making the p/e to thick (I don't really know if it will or not). I was building a Japanese cruiser so all of my p/e (I used Lionroar sets for my IJN ships) were sprayed with the Kure gray. It works better for me this way. Even if the color is not an exact shade for what I am using on whatever ship I am building, most of the p/e will be painted again with the ship and whatever gets missed is at least gray and not shinny brass. Some of the paint does come off when you are folding or triming the p/e and depending on what it is I will either repaint then or install it and repaint with the ship. I had troubles with delicate things on Lexington like the radars and railings that were installed, also some w/t doors along the edge. It also has a small benifit if I need to remove a part, since the superglue is gluing the paint and not the brass. When I need to remove something it removes the paint but does less damage to the actual part. Of course, the bond to the model is not as strong (but strong enough) as gluing unpainted brass. Kind of a trade off. Hope this helps.
