 Here is my second carrier in my carrier series.... I am planning on building an Escort carrier, a Light Carrier, and a Fleet Carrier all in 1/700 scale and all to be number "25". I.e. CVE-25, CVL-25 and CV-25, things were going well until I started research into the CVL project...... thats when I discovered there would be NO CV-25. The CVL's started life as "CV"s and AFTER they were built they were re-designated as Light carriers (CVLs) and the CV's went from CV-1 to CV-21 and then started again at CV 31 and up!.  ;D So, you have seen part one in CVE-25, USS Croatan on this forum, here is the build of USS Cowpens, CVL-25. The kit is an older kit from Dragon and like the real ships, the kit was modified from a "Cleveland" class light cruiser (9 hulls were converted into carriers after the losses we suffered in the early part of WWII) and it is a weird parts breakdown for the hull, lots of putty. One bad feature of the kit is the lack of aircraft! There is ONE Devastator torpedo plane (not used from these ships) and ONE F9F "Panther" JET fighter, just a wish in WWII. CVL air groups were F6F "Hellcats" and TBF/M "Avenger" torpedo bombers. I will beg on modelwarships.com for some spare aircraft from people. I will be using Gold Medal Models and Lion Roar Photo etch in this build and she will be painted in Measure 33 / 7A, which is 5-N (navy blue), 5-H (haze gray), and 5-P (pale gray) with metal decks in 20-b (deck blue) and the flight deck in 250-N (gray flight deck stain). There are some nice reference photos of Cowpens, including some in color from WWII so that helps a lot. Here are some pictures.....  The hull finished, painted in gray and the flight deck in brown...  Starboard side camo is being applied (port and starboard patterns were different)  Port side camo...  Flight deck stain added...  Ah, and here is where the problems began!! Masking is applied to airbrush on the white (actually light gray) dashed flight deck lines... When the paint was dried, I removed the tape (Tamiya tape) and it lifted some of the gray and brown flight deck paint, all the way to bare plastic! Grrrr, at this point the kit went into the box and on the stalled kit shelf. Tonight I brought it out and started again....  The repainted flight deck..... I hope the shiny spots will go away with dullcoat and weathering.  construction of the funnels (4 to build) and the main mast / island top.  Gold Medal Models Photo etch for both CVE and CVL kits (I also used this on the USS Croatan CVE-25)  Lion roar USN 40mm guns in Photo etch, Cowpens has 9 twin mounts and 2 quad 40mm mounts plus 20 or so 20mm guns to add.  Starboard bow as of tonight....  Port quarter as of tonight.... More to follow as I go along.

 I have been working on the funnels and radar mast, adding some photo etch doors and fire hoses and started the AA guns.... I am deciding if I want to go "all" photo etch, which makes the barrels look flat at some angels, but still pretty good for 1/700 scale.......  ...... or use a combo of the photo etch parts and kit plastic parts, which will give me round barrels but chunky mounts.....  folding these little buggers takes a lot of time and Patience!

So last night I started working on Cowpens again, I planned on getting the funnels installed with p/e, the aircraft crane built, the radar tower between the funnels added and the p/e radars made..... Well, then my 3 legged terrorist joined me, she wanted attention, so I held her for as minute put her down and tried to work again...... next she jumped on the arm of my chair and put her paw on my shoulder, so I petted her and put her down...... a minute later she jumped on the chair, walked up on my shoulder and out her paw on my head, so I held her in my lap thinking I could work that way, but when a piece of p/e fell and landed in her fur I knew I would have trouble! Darn terrorist cat! Anyway, this was last nights progress.  Here the funnels are added, no p/e braces yet and not painted, the radar tower is partly in place and the aircraft crane is laying on the flight deck.  Here is the p/e with the funnel bracing and radars, Cowpens will have 4 radars, 1 SK, 1 SC2, 1 YE and 1 SC... Hopefully I can ditch the terrorist tonight and get some good work done! ;D

Wow!! the most interesting on the table is that 25 cents coin from the state of hawai!!! is it for trade? it is just one out of 4 missing to complete my collection of quarters from all the states...

The Shinano is on a stand by as I am working on 3 bomber projects (B-25 FAM, Ki-21 Sally and Ju-188) I will post a couple of pictures of how is it right now.

 After 2 nights of "terror" attacks by the Bengal "3 legged terrorist group" work on the USS Cowpens could resume....  Update to Cowpens.... SK radar finished and dry fitted, mast dry fitted to the island, funnels and supports added....  Also many watertight doors were added to the ship....  "3 legged terrorist" after the attack, our security forces did a good job!  ;D

Today, I only got the rails around the search light platforms done and the forward search light glued on...... Then the terrorist returned! It took a long time to form these railing and get them to fit these small platforms, tomorrow night will be the railing around the very top platform on the mast.

Ok got this one out of the "wait" pile and started in again. The airwing is left along with the anti aircraft guns and final p/e. I have a set of p/e quad and twin 40mm AA, but I didn't like the look of the guns when folded..... and they are very difficult to fold. So I looked for another way and came up with half p/e and half plastic. 2 guns are done and the stern mount is fitted.   combinied p/e plastic mount.  Stern quad 40mm and 2 single 20mm instaled.  The first of 9 twin 40mm mounts dry fitted, railing need to be added before the mounts are glued in. more to follow!

My list of things to do, has the stalled "Mighty Moo" on it to get finished this year.... So, work was resumed, I started by applying a gloss coat for decals. I was very worried about these large decals that go on the flight deck, if they will not go on good, then the ship goes in the trash! ;D Part of the reason for the long time in re-starting this ship is I have been hoping since Dragon has released a state of the art new kit in 1/350th that they would scale it down to 1/700..... The accuracy of this kit is not good..... But, it looks like that won't happen, so this Moo gets re-started. Here is the decal after applying....   ;D they went on great! as well as the numbers on the bow and her name on the stern (I know, names were not on durring WWII, but she has her's.... modelers choice!). The railings are being added now as well as the AA gun batteries being built.  Made some boo-boo's.... I should have added some of the railings before her flight deck was glued down, they are a PITA to do now! |

I noticed you paint the photo etch before while it's still in the sheet....does this work well?
What kind of primer do you use on it?
