I am starting a new project!! I am hoping that this will be a quick build since there are not to many parts. It is the Fine Molds, 1/72 scale kit of the IJN midget submarine "Pearl Harbor version" These subs were used all over the Pacific during WW II but are most famous for their attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th, 1941. I have not decided which of the three versions I will build, but I am leaning to the Pearl harbor sub since more of the parts are used from the kit. Today, I did research, parts check, and initial dry fitting.

Here is my progress up to Nov 21st. Soon I will spray a primer coat to check how well I eliminated the seems on the hull. The conning tower has been started, as well as the stern planes. The bow is on and puttied, waiting for detail work on the bow, stern, and conning tower. So far it has been a fun kit that fits together well and looks nicely detailed.

I had a chance to spend a few minutes on this kit today, you can see the primer coat of flat black, the seams look good, so construction went ahead and the bow caps (actually the 2 17.7" torpedoes) were added along with the first propeller, periscope, and the "display" 17.7" torpedo was built. There are only a another dozen parts left to do. Then the painting of the boat.... the color scheme is a nice boring black! A few decals will be added and she will be complete. Gabe, this is the type of midget submarine that the Japanese used at the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec 7th, 1941. The Japanese took five of them, mounted piggyback on five of their large I-class submarines. The first US shot of the Pacific war was fired by USS Arron Ward while on picket duty near the entrance to Pearl Harbor. The sub that Arron Ward sank was just recently located off the entrance to the harbor ( www.soest.hawaii.edu/HURL/midget.html ) . One sub was sunk inside of the harbor by a US destroyer and one might have attacked Battleship row during the attack (there is still a great debate about that). One midget was found on a beach the next day. These boats (of a modified design) were also used in a raid on Sydney, Australia and in the Indian Ocean. There is one still on Kiska Island in Alaska that the Japanese abandoned the island. The Midgets are an interesting story, google them up one day!!

Nice, now I know a little more of the history on this mini subs... Hey how about a mini diorama in the beach like the real pictures?..some sand and some american soldiers checking the sub..? not a bad idea ah?... Keep on the good work.

she is painted..... view from bow to stern. I am going to add a light weathering and she will be finished and ready for a base. I like the diorama idea, I thought about it.... but decided I just wanted a fast, easy kit to build.

OK, here it is.... finished!! An easy, fun kit of a unusual and historical boat. Here is the starboard side.... Starboard bow view.... Port quarter view.... I would recommend the Fine Molds 1/72 scale "Type A Target" to any level builder and especially to someone suffering from "AMS".
