In an attempt to obtain clarification, what are the “correct” colors of the floatplanes that cruisers carried summer of 1942? I have seen “Pete’s” with and without black cowling, with and without yellow band/stripe of the inboard portion of the top and bottom wings, center floats that are overall gray and IJN green with gray bottoms, “Meatball” with and without white background, prop and hub mahogany/brown, prop black and hub gray or both black. Same for the Jake. I cannot help but feel that a lot of the different colors have to do with ability in 700 scale – if you can, then its right. If you cannot, then just green top, gray bottom and the meatballs. Also feel that June 1942 time frame, brilliant colors were kinda of okay as Japan “thought” they still controlled the air and sea of the Pacific. Later, 1943, they went to more of the green and gray colors.
As I am in the process of building a total of 4 cruisers for the Battle of Midway Island, I have kinda decided to go with the overall green and light gray underneath.
May I impose on someone to set me straight?

The best place to start might be: J-aircraft.com, as they have some solid research on the whole spectrum of IJN, and IJA paint schemes.

Thanks a million Dan!! According to what I "saw", the BOM Jake's were overall Gray with black cowlings and red prop warning stripe on the float.
