Welcome to SSMB's group build that will start in June. We have decided on the Big, Inexpensive, and looking at the in box pictures, relatively good 21st Century kit in 1/32 scale. Will it be as nice as my dreamed of Tamiya 32 scale zero?? No, but it is only $10!! Here are pictures of the kit starting with the box art. Most of the sprues from the kit, notice the little bag of screws and nuts.... one of the challenges of the kit! Hmmm, a pre-painted pilot figure and rubber tires. And finally what appears to be a nicely printed decal sheet with options. I can't wait to get started on this kit, other than hiding the nuts and bolts that hold the kit together, it looks like it will be fun to build and detail. I have some ideas on painting my example already ;D I hope you are one of the members who will be participating in this adventure!

Here is the story behind my project: At the end of 1941, and most of 1942, there was very little information about the plane that dominated the skies over China and most recently at Pearl Harbor. The pilots that have survived an encounter with this great airplane in the skly, could only talk about the formidable manouverability and speed of this agile fighter; even many pilots confused it with the Me 109. In April of 1942, a group of 36 Zeros clashed with 60 brithish airplanes (Hurriacanes, Swordfishes and Fulmars), the japs shot down 27 brits at the expense of 1 Zero lost. The allied pilots found themselves out classed and ill informed about the capabilities of the nimble japanese fighter. But in June of 1942, an event changed the way the allied pilots fought against the japane Zero: As a distraction to the main attack in Midway, the Japanese sent a fleet to attack Dutch Harbour in Alaska. During the attack one particular Zero was hit by fire; the Pilot PO Tadashy Koga (19 Y.O.) tried to land his airplane a few miles away from Duth Harbour, but was unsuccesfull and the airplane flipped upside down in a swampy area of the Akutan Island. Two of Koga's wingmates followed until the crash; they had orders to shot the downed and prevent capture, but they decided not to shoot in the hopes that their friend was still alive and able to reach the coast where a submarine would rescue him. In August, Koga was found dead still inside his airplane with his head half deep in mud; the airplane was shipped to San Diego, CA were it was restored to a 98%, painted in USN colors and with american markings, tested against P-39's, Hellcats and P-51's from Sep. to Oct 1942. By the end of September, the weaknesses of the Zero had been revealed, and the information about how to escape a Zero, was passed arround to all the pilots in the Pacific. "Koga's Zero" or the "Akutan Zero" was destroyed in 1945 when a landing Helldiver ran over it. One of two japanese pilots who that fateful day could not shot their friend, died in combat, the other survived the war and in a recent interview declared: "Koga's Zero acquisition was no less as serious a setback as Japan's defeat in Midway"

An excellent ,short account of Kogas Zero. I knew a man that worked on that Zero, and he was suprised by the poor riveting, and fit of some parts. An easy way to determine Kogas plane is the broken (wooden)radio mast, deemed unimportant to repair. Jose, If you are using US markings, may I have the Jap markings? I can trade/ buy if needed.

I forgot: This series(21st cent) is considered to be very accurate in shape, and outline, with correct panel lines, and decent detail. Too bad they never released the P-51 B!

Hmmm, that is interesting..... the art is "skins" for a computer/video game, I wonder how accurate their research is. There are some cool schemes depicted!

;D Ahhhhh, what a weekend, ipms sd's regional contest is done and IPMS Baja Con VI is finished......
I had a great time at Baja Con, thank you to the organizers!! Lets plan number VII !!!!! AND now it is time to start the zero project, I guess we can take our time and lets say have them ready to compete in Orange Con?? (Oct 17th 2009) Is everyone building them up for all of us entering them at Orange Con??
Remember, this is a no holds barred build, do what ever you like, use whatever you like in the build. It has been hard waiting this long to start, but tonight I will start!!
Enjoy!

I'm on it, and I think it would be nice if we can have them ready for OCon and present them as a group build.
